About TECHSTAR, Inc.

Implementing Operational Success...

Founded by Hop Howlett in 1988, TECHSTAR, Inc. is a unique training and publishing company devoted to teaching the staffs of industrial facilities the tenets of systematic operations and maintenance. The method of teaching is through analysis of industrial and transportation accidents, emphasizing the value of skills such as conducting pre-job briefings, using procedures, monitoring critical parameters, and performing independent verification—habits that disrupt the accumulation of critical accident contributors.

Designed to showcase the habits and skills of disciplined industrial teams, “Systematic Industrial Operations” is TECHSTAR’s most popular seminar. It is based upon the best-selling TECHSTAR, Inc. text, The Industrial Operator’s Handbook, 2nd Edition. Both text and seminar engage the reader/participant in an interesting analysis of what causes accidents to occur and how most can be avoided through the systematic use of simple skills.

Successful industrial operation relies upon equipment that functions as designed when required. Without precise maintenance, equipment reliability is jeopardized. As a result, maintenance plays a vital role in preserving the integrity of the safe operating envelope. Maintenance and the Safety Envelope is a TECHSTAR, Inc. publication and seminar devoted to the importance of the maintenance function. As in “Systematic Industrial Operations” the book and the seminar employ case studies to illustrate principles and habits that dramatically reduce the probability of accidents.

Failed leadership is frequently at the heart of industrial accidents. Leaders who don’t instill the disciplines of systematic operations and maintenance within their industrial teams increase the likelihood of accidents. To address the importance of leading well, TECHSTAR, Inc. has written and developed the text and accompanying seminar, Trustworthy Leaders. Both book and seminar examine the characteristics and skills that underlie effective leadership.
